😺 Spotify's AI DJ

PLUS: AI music is overrated!

Welcome, humans.

Elon Musk mentioned in a Twitter Spaces that Grok 2 is set to launch next month and will be ā€œbetter thanā€ GPT-4. In simpler terms for those unfamiliar with Musk's predictions: Grok 2 will launch in four months and will be worse than GPT-4.

Here’s what you need to know about AI today:

  • Spotify launched an AI feature that creates entire playlists.

  • AI-generated music hasn’t attracted much of an audience.

  • Meta is releasing small versions of Llama 3 next week.

  • DeepMind’s CEO said that it’d be difficult for Google to catch up to Sora.

Spotify launches idea → playlist AI feature.

With Spotify’s new AI feature, ā€œAI Playlist,ā€ just describe the type of music you’re looking for, and the AI will spit out a customized playlist.

For instance, we might say, ā€œGive me a playlist for late-night writing sprints,ā€ and the AI will spit out ~30 songs that match our vibe.

If the playlist doesn’t hit our beat, we can tweak it by giving additional instructions, like ā€œLess lyrical songs.ā€

The feature will initially roll out to Premium subscribers in the UK/Australia—here’s how to find it:

Here’s our take: It’s…..fine???

It might ease the embarrassment for those of us who dread sharing our Spotify playlists (guilty), but it hardly redefines music discovery—Pandora has been on this beat for years.

A reminder: Spotify rolled out a somewhat similar feature last year, the ā€œAI DJ,ā€ which curates songs based on your listening habits.

FYI: AI DJ missed the mark more than a DJ spinning gangster rap at a corporate networking event.

For everyone missing the simplicity of the iPod Shuffle’s surprise tracks, say ā€œAye!ā€

AI music = overrated.

One glaring omission from Spotify's recent AI ā€œinnovationsā€? Music created by AI.

It’s no surprise: artists aren’t exactly fans of AI-generated music—last week, 200 big names signed an open letter to Big Tech, calling for an end to ā€œthe assault on human creativity.ā€

Most music listeners don’t care much for AI music either:

Sure, AI music generators like Suno have their charm, but there’s something about knowing a track wasn’t made by humans that kinda ruins the experience for us.

We’re not saying AI-crafted tunes are all bad—take a look at this insane demo of upcoming tool Udio we stumbled upon this week:

But for AI-generated tunes without lyrics, there’s no reason people shouldn’t just use the massive amount of free stock music and instrumentals out there on the internet.

Why it matters: AI's role in music isn't doomed—there’s probably some other form of this that isn’t just ā€œtype some text, get a full songā€. We hope it’ll evolve into tools that amplify rather than substitute artistic expression, possibly by granting artists greater creative control over their music.

Around the Horn.

  • Meta will launch small versions of Llama 3 next week as it tries to catch up to GPT-4.

  • Claude 3 can now interact with external tools such as retrieving files from your company's database.

  • Poe is introducing a payment model for chatbot creators, compensating them each time a user engages with their bot.

  • Google DeepMind’s CEO said it’d be difficult to catch up to Sora.

Treats To Try.

  1. AI-Oracle combines the abilities of Claude 3, GPT-4, and Perplexity into one open-source chatbot.

  2. llm.c (by former OpenAI researcher Andrej Karpathy) lets you train LLMs in pure C without needing 245MB of PyTorch or 107MB of cPython.

  3. Muraena uses AI to find high-quality leads from a database of 720M contacts.

Tuesday Ticker.

Here are the results from last week’s poll:

  • W.M. chose ChatGPT: ā€œI normally draft an initial email or conversational response, but then run it through ChatGPT only to see if it will make the response sound better or smarter in some slight way.ā€

  • F.C. chose Siri: ā€œHey Siri, Call my Mom. That's about it.ā€

  • T.E. chose Pi: ā€œIt provides prompts after each response to dig deeper, it’s totally free, and seems to have more emotional intelligence than the standard chatbots.ā€
