😺 A huge day in AI

PLUS: everything you need to know about OpenAI DevDay

Welcome, humans.

Everyone has that one event they’ve been waiting for all year. For some, it’s the Super Bowl. For others, it’s the finale of Love Island (the British version, duh). Our us, it was OpenAI’s first DevDay yesterday!

Let’s just say we found true, unencumbered love—and we can’t wait to spill the tea from this electrifying, romance-filled AI event straight from Silicon Valley's inner circles.

Here’s what you need to know about AI today:

  • OpenAI announced GPTs—a way to create a ChatGPT-like chatbot for [anything]!

  • GPT-4 Turbo is the latest and greatest version of ChatGPT1

  • GPT-4 Turbo has 128K context windows, a 16X increase!

  • OpenAI launched a new Assistants API that incorporates RAG!

GPTs—Create A Chatbot For Anything Imagineable.

IMHO, the standout announcement from OpenAI’s DevDay yesterday was GPTs—build a custom ChatGPT for any use case with zero code.

Until yesterday, ChatGPT was one-size-fits-all.

The problem here is that you had to start from scratch for every new task—plus figure out prompt engineering, which is annoying AF.

Enter GPTs. Now, all you have to do is describe the type of chatbot you want, upload any relevant files, and presto – you can concoct:

  • A mentor for creative writing.

  • A consultant for tech support.

  • A negotiation strategist.

Plus & Enterprise users get access to all these new chatbots for free via the [Explore] feature.

This includes a Canva GPT that designs anything from prompts + a Zapier-powered GPTs that do all y’all business automations within ChatGPT.

The cool part is that soon anyone can design and launch their own GPT, and get paid when people use it. We recently chatted about Poe doing a version of this…RIP!

GPTs are about to be everything everywhere all at once.

This means businesses will build private/public GPTs for very specific functions, from drafting and scrutinizing legal compliance documents to creating tailored sales agreements for clientele.

So hey—what will you build?™

OpenAI Made It Easier And More Powerful To Build With Its APIs:

While most of us use OpenAI for ChatGPT, >2M developers build new products on top of OpenAI’s APIs.

Yesterday = Christmas for these people.

The main present is a new, smarter model called GPT-4 Turbo, which has a bunch of mini gifts hidden inside:

  • Way longer context window (128K): developers can fit >300 pages of text into a single prompt, a 16X increase from before!

    • This also means us plebs will soon be able to input super long PDFs into ChatGPT, a feat once only reserved for Claude.

  • Way cheaper to use: 3X cheaper for input tokens and 2X cheaper for output tokens than GPT-4 (similar news for GPT-3.5 Turbo).

There are SO many more goodies for builders, like a new Assistants API, DALL-E 3 API, & Audio API. We’ll unpack all of these soon—stay tuned, ya cool cats!

Around the Horn.

Rapid-fire of other big announcements from DevDay!

  • ChatGPT now has 100M weekly active users.

  • OpenAI pledges to cover legal costs for users tangled in copyright disputes.

  • Function Calling: call multiple functions in a single message.

  • JSON Mode: guarantees GPT's replies in valid JSON format.

This Should (Probably) Exist.

Most AI-generated memes make us scratch our heads, but this could very quickly change with vision AIs like GPT-4V.

Imagine a tool where you could upload any image create infinite memes:

We treasure handmade memes, yet the prospect of meme-making for all, Baby Boomers included, feels like it would bring us all together, despite our generational differences!
