Is ChatGPT Getting Worse? 📉

The AI power users on Hacker News have been making bold claims recently that ChatGPT is getting worse…

Specifically: GPT-4.

To test this, two versions of ChatGPT were given the same coding problem: ChatGPT before its latest update (black avatar) and ChatGPT now (purple avatar). The ChatGPT that’s live today:

• generated more buggy code.

• was worse at reviewing code.

• hallucinated way more when confused.

One explanation is that OpenAI’s new safety measures to prevent harm/bias might be restricting the model too much.

Another theory is that using plugins outputs worse responses (we’ve observed this).

Are they onto something? Unknown. One OpenAI employee was adamant that GPT-4’s model has not changed since March and that outputs simply evolve over time.

Why it matters: For now, any changes in ChatGPT’s quality aren’t noticeable for most users. We just hope each model doesn’t deteriorate over time like iPhones to get us to upgrade.
