šŸ˜ŗ Top 150 AI tools

PLUS: We're shocked at what ranked in the top 10...

Welcome, humans.

Anyone catch The Grammys last night? We were absolutely here for that duo rendition of ā€œFast Carā€ by Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs.

And don't fret over unexpected camera pans to Taylor Swift while we dive into ChatGPT discussions. We're not The Grammys...or a Kansas City Chiefs game.

Hereā€™s what you need to know about AI today:

  • GenZ & Millenials dominate AI usage in 2024.

  • ChatGPT, Bing, & Bard are the top 3 most visited tools.

  • Bard is rumored to receive a significant upgrade this week with Gemini Ultra.

  • Sam Altman hinted ChatGPT-4 should get less lazy now.

The current state of generative AI in 2024.

Mainstream media often gravitates toward polarized narratives about AI (e.g. ā€œAI is automating everyoneā€ OR ā€œno one uses AIā€).

Lazyyyy.

Today, weā€™re taking a step back to reflect honestly on the state of generative AI, with some beautiful charts courtesy of FlexOSā€™s January survey.Ā

  1. Who uses AI?

  2. What do they use it for?

  3. What tools do they use?

1. White-Collar Workers + GenZ/Millenials + Students.

Two groups dominate AI usage: GenZ and tech-savvy white-collar professionals. The two groups overlap A LOT.

65% of generative AI users are GenZ/Millenials, a stat that becomes even more pronounced within consumer applications like Character AI.

Interestingly, Neuron readers skew older, cause we appeal to all generations like Harry Potter books.

this graph was made entirely using ChatGPT :)

2. Writing + Socializing + Research + Images.

Writing is AIā€™s killer ability, and ChatGPT has gotten really darn good at crafting emails, blogs, & captions that sound authentically human. IMO, Coding is AIā€™s 2nd killer ability, despite its absence from the pie chart.

These two tasksā€”writing & codingā€”account for a significant portion of university coursework, explaining why "education" ranks #3. AI's application spans cheating, homework assistance, study aids, grading, and more.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, the moment you've eagerly anticipated... the most celebrated AI tools of 2024:

ChatGPT is by far the most used AI tool, commanding more traffic than the next 10 biggest tools combined, according to SimilarWeb.

People love using *chatbots*, with Bard, Bing, Character AI, and Perplexity rounding out the top 5 (find the top 150 here).

Two shockers: Grammarly at #6 and the amount of widely popular education tools previously unknown to us, such as Brainly, CourseHero, and ELSA.

Not all innovations hyped up by media/tech circles have made a significant impact (yet):

  1. AI for data analysis is limited, and in our experience, ChatGPT hallucinates a lot with numbers (for best results, use the excel or Data Analyst GPT).

  2. Text-to-video: Innovations like Runway and Pika are impressively cool, yet they haven't reached the quality of professionally edited videos.

  3. AI agents: The vision of AI systems capable of performing multiple tasks autonomously remains unfulfilled. Most AI tools excel in a single function.

Around the Horn.

they listened!

  • On 2/7, Google is expected to rename Bard to Gemini and unveil access to Gemini Ultra, its flagship model that rivals GPT-4.

  • Tim Cook said that generative AI features are coming to users ā€œlater this yearā€.

  • ChatGPT is available on the Apple Vision Pro; Hereā€™s what it looks like.

  • HuggingFace released the ability to create custom versions of open-source models, akin to OpenAIā€™s GPT Store.

Treat To Try.

ML Blocks is a drag-&-drop builder for image workflowsā€”think of it as Zapier for editing photos.

We tinkered with it, and while it doesnā€™t have a ton of features yet, it has the potential to transform any photo based on specific instructions in just one click.
