šŸ˜ŗ OpenAI: this isn't even my final form

PLUS: a new open-source leader

Welcome, humans.

Weā€™re hiding our cats indoors today, and we recommend you do the same. Thereā€™s a bird of prey on the looseā€¦more below.

Hereā€™s whatā€™s going on in AI today:

  • The GPU shortage is holding OpenAI back from its true potential.

  • The top spot in open source is now a battle between Meta and the UAE.

  • Teenagers are turning on Snapā€™s AI.

  • Recraft makes awesome vector art using AI.

Sam Altman: GPUs Are Limiting Us šŸ’æ

Uncle Sam Altman has been quite ā€œopenā€ about the future of OpenAI (not so much his models). He just dropped some important info on OpenAIā€™s roadmap.

Here are the deets:

1) GPT-4 is the priority, but GPUs are a huge issue. No GPUs means:

  • Slow rollout of the 32K context window and going beyond it to 100K-1 million (this lets you have longer convos with ChatGPT).

  • Limited availability of private models for enterprises.

  • Limited capacity for the fine-tuning API (which allows you to customize GPT-4 using your own data).

  • No image support for GPT-4 (which was teased during its launch) until 2024.

Hear that? The $NVDA rocket taking off for another trip around Saturn.

2) ChatGPT Plugins have been underwhelming.

The bet was that ChatGPT would be the new ā€œhome baseā€ for people. But itā€™s turning out that they want ChatGPT-type functionality in all other apps instead.

This matches what weā€™re seeing: Plugins, while ripe with potential in concept, just arenā€™t a slam dunk yet.

3) OpenAI wonā€™t build any more apps beyond ChatGPT.

This is an effort to court developers afraid that OpenAI will eventually eat their lunch.

This might be reassuring to some, but ā€œjust ChatGPTā€ isā€¦still a lot.

Why it matters: AI is unpredictable, and thatā€™s partially due to never knowing what world-bending move OpenAI is about to make next. This is perhaps the longest-term view weā€™ve had into OpenAIā€™s plans yet.

FROM OUR PARTNERS

Use AI To Create Accurate And Safe Synthetic Data

The hot conversation in enterprises? Deploying your own AI models.

The second hottest conversation? Privacy, privacy, privacy.

Gretel fine-tunes AI models with anonymized synthetic data rooted in your actual data. Itā€™s a must-have for any enterprise. Seriously. You get:

  • 10x quicker access to high-quality data.

  • 5x lower costs vs. manual data.

  • 99% synthetic data accuracy.

ā€¦all wherever you are: in the cloud or in your environment.

Google and Snowflake use Gretel. Shouldnā€™t you be using the tools the leading enterprises use?

The New King in Open Source šŸ¦…

The list of competitors racing to make an open source language model to challenge GPT-4 is a smattering of relatively unknown names:

  • MosaicML

  • Stable Diffusion

  • Together

  • EleutherAI

ā€¦.and Meta, which people do know.

But thereā€™s a shakeup in the rankings, and the new top spot goes to *checks notes* the United Arab Emirates?

Last week, the UAE dropped Falcon, a fully open language model thatā€™s now scoring at the top of the leaderboards, beating Meta.

Yesterday, they also dropped the original 10% royalty for any revenue over $1M generated by using Falcon.

Why it matters: Open source is all about having options to counteract companies like OpenAI. Now, there are two models (Metaā€™s LLaMA and the UAEā€™s Falcon) that are darn close to chasing down ChatGPTā€™s secret sauce.

And theyā€™re completely free and open for others to build on. Expect lots of projects built on Falcon coming soon.

Around the Horn šŸ¦„

  • Ask HN: What's the best self hosted/local alternative to GPT-4?

  • Character AI topped 1.7 million downloads in less than a week after launching. (Itā€™s the chatbot people arenā€™t talking about nearly enough)

  • Instacart launched an AI search tool that helps users save time searching for food.

  • Google is showering hot AI video startup Runway with tens of millions in Google Cloud credits to keep it from sending business to Microsoft/Amazon.

  • Snapchat wants its AI to reply to you with Snaps; teens are bullying the AI.

Thursday Trivia šŸ„‡

Have I introduced my new girlfriend, Margot Robbie? She told me The Neuron is the only AI newsletter she readsā€¦

Everyone knows the rules: one photo is AI, and one is real.

Which is which?

A Cat's Commentary šŸ˜»

Trivia answer: The left is real, and the right is AIā€¦

That's all we have for today. See you cool cats on Twitter if you're there: @nonmayorpete & @noahedelman02.
