PLUS: Sam Altman is in deep trouble with Scarlett Johansson...

Welcome, humans.

Last Friday, we posed a question about what OpenAI might be paying Scarlett Johansson to lend her voice to ChatGPT. Turns out, that # was a solid $0.

A new statement from Scarlett Johansson clarified that Sam Altman offered her the chance to voice ChatGPT-4o, she declined, and they used a similar voice anyway. (OpenAI maintains it was a different actress and had cast her prior to approaching Johansson).

Either way, OpenAI paused the voice, and itā€™s a BAD look for everyone involved there. Hey Sam, we know a great lawyer! First name Chat, last name...well, you can guess.

Hereā€™s what you need to know about AI today:

  • Microsoft announced a new PC thatā€™s focused on everything-AI.

  • Windows is getting a Recall feature that can retrieve anything you've seen on your screen.

  • So far, the ChatGPT desktop app on Mac has been impressive.

  • ChatGPT app downloads on iOS have spiked following ChatGPT-4oā€™s release.

On todayā€™s podcast: Microsoftā€™s PC announcements, the future of our devices, and all eyes on Apple WWDC (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube).

Windows PCs are stepping into the AI age.

Ahhh, the Windows PC, the bane of corporate America. Itā€™s like my digestive system in winter: prone to viruses, frequently crashing, and always fighting off bugs.

Windowsā€™ street cred might be changing soon, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella:

ā€œAppleā€™s done a fantastic job of really innovating on the Mac. Weā€™re going to outperform them. We finally feel we have a very competitive product.ā€

Introducing Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft's latest innovation is a laptop designed to excel in AI. Literally. Itā€™s powered by Arm-designed Qualcomm Snapdragon X series chips, neural processing units, and edge computing.

Totally not complicated stuff!

Itā€™s Copilot integrated into every way you interact with the PC. No app, no ChatGPT in your browser, no internet necessary. And it comes packed with powerful features:

1. Copilot will be able to see your screen while you work.

Sound familiar? Thatā€™s because OpenAI introduced a similar feature with ChatGPT-4o last week. Naturally, Copilot runs on GPT-4o.

BTW, we've tested ChatGPTā€™s desktop app on Mac, and its "vision" is pretty sharp, helping with things like tech support and explaining images.

A vision-capable AI on Windows could be even more powerful cause itā€™ll connect with the Office apps youā€™re using on your screen. Imagine, ā€œHey, does this Word format match our companyā€™s template?ā€

2. It can locate anything you've ever searched for or viewed on your computer using "Recall," which essentially takes screenshots of your screen 24/7. You could ask it to find things like ā€œNeuron piece about GPT-4o from last weekā€ or ā€œdocument [x client] sent me last week.ā€

Black Mirror much? Absolutely. Would we still use this? Definitely. Microsoft assures that everything Recall sees remains private.

If Recall looks familiar, itā€™s cause Limitless (formerly Rewind) has been developing a similar concept as a web/Mac/Windows app for 18 months. RIP to its Windows version...perhaps its upcoming wearable will fare better!

Finally, this new PC offers real-time translation and transcription of meetings across any call app (Zoom, Teams, Meet) in over 40 languages.

Hereā€™s the biggie: We're moving towards a world where AI isn't just a website but is woven into every aspect of how we interact with devices. Microsoft is determined not to repeat its smartphone missteps this time.

But weā€™re very interested to see what Apple has up its sleeve turtleneck. We know a ā€œmajor announcementā€ is expected at its June 10th WWDC event, one that involves an OpenAI integration (did someone say GPT-4o-powered Siri??).

Hear Peteā€™s honest reaction to all of this and more on todayā€™s podcast (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube).
