šŸ˜ŗ ChatGPT goes down

PLUS: Coincidence or AI apocalypse??

Welcome, humans.

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, went viral yesterday in a clip where he signed *checks notes* a woman's chest at a tech expo. Before he did, he said aloud, "Is that a good idea?". Aka, might I receive an email from HR later today saying, "We need to talk"?

Coincidentally, that's the same question we ask ourselves every night before hitting publish on this blurb. In our case, though, HR is ChatGPT-4o, and every time we ask it about potentially R-rated content, it responds, ā€œAs an AI language model, I donā€™t have the capacity to judge...ā€ So, we know we're clear to publish!

Hereā€™s what you need to know about AI today:

  • Weā€™re delivering the scoop on AIā€™s massive power outage this week.

  • Pika Labs snagged a cool $80M for its text-to-video AI.

  • Just 4% of Americans aged 14-22 use AI almost every day.

  • Nvidia's market cap hit a staggering $3T yesterday!

On the podcast: Why a former OpenAI researcher is sounding the alarm on AGI, ASI, and, yeah, even OpenAI. (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube).

What ChatGPTā€™s power outage really means for AI.

On Tuesday, Gen Z and Millennials experienced the most traumatizing event since the great Snapchat redesign of 2018: ChatGPT stopped working for several hours.

And so did Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. No one knows exactly how it happened, but all four services resumed later that day.

The term traumatizing is, of course, an exaggeration, but ChatGPTā€™s first outage in over six months really showcased how deeply millions depend on AI chatbots to help them do their jobs these days.

People humorously (& fictitiously) rushed to X to lament that they couldnā€™t get any work done without ChatGPT. It was if a real power failure had occurred.

Thatā€™s just on X, though.

Back in the real world, most didnā€™t notice that ChatGPT went down cause, TBH, most people donā€™t use ChatGPT. And thatā€™s sometimes easy to forget in our little AI bubble, where everyone uses and talks about AI 24/7.

Check out these stats:

  • According to a Common Sense Media survey, only 4% of Americans aged 14-22 use generative AI ā€œalmost daily or every day.ā€

  • And Pew reported back in March that just 20% of US adults say ā€œthey have ever used ChatGPT for tasks at work.ā€

BTW: If you know someone who wants to start using AI at work, definitely recommend our Intro to ChatGPT courseā€”itā€™s perfect for beginners.

Other humorous reactions to AI's Tuesday blackout included fears of an AI apocalypse or suspicions that the FBI was testing a ā€œkill switchā€ on overly powerful AI.

These are all jokes, of course (talking to you, HR!).
