šŸ˜ŗ ChatGPT Search rumors confirmed

PLUS: How to turn on Google AI Search.

Welcome, humans.

Microsoft Copilot will soon get an autocomplete feature that offers suggestions while youā€™re prompting it.

Itā€™s the AI version of those people who try to complete your sentences when you pause to think about the next word. PSA to those type of folks: Stop. Iā€™m not an AIā€”I need time to think. You canā€™t guess what I was going to say!

Hereā€™s what you need to know about AI today:

  • Confirmed: OpenAI is rolling out a search engine.

  • OpenAI released a doc sharing how it teaches ChatGPT to behave.

  • 75% of knowledge workers now use AI tools at work.

  • Google announced AlphaFold 3 for predicting all of lifeā€™s molecules.

On todayā€™s podcast: Pete breaks down the results from an AI hospital simulation (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube).

ChatGPT Search is near, but Google SGE is already here.

BREAKING: OpenAI is building a search engine that will deliver answers from the internet with source citations.

We covered this on Friday and extended our analysis on Saturdayā€™s podcast (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube).

TLDR: Expect this product to look very similar to ChatGPT, except it has access to the internet, so it can answer questions like ā€œWhatā€™s the weather in SF today?ā€

This is a pretty big deal cause itā€™s OpenAI explicitly saying, ā€œWe are coming for you, Google Search.ā€

But it wonā€™t be a walk in the park for two reasons:

  1. Google essentially has a monopoly on search, with 92% market share.

  2. Googleā€™s own AI search engine, SGE, is quite good.

It's so good that weā€™ve actually begun using Google SGE for almost all of the simple questions weā€™d typically ask Perplexity, and it shouldn't be hard to see why:

perplexity

We highly recommend turning on Googleā€™s AI Searchā€”hereā€™s how:

  1. Go to Google Labs.

  2. Find ā€œSearch Powered By Generative AIā€.

  3. Toggle On ā€œSGE, generative AI in Searchā€.

Three key points about SGE:

  • It doesnā€™t provide AI answers for everything, just the easy stuff.

  • It still makes sh*t up (case in point).

  • It displays its sources more prominently than Perplexity, likely to appease publishers.

Why it matters: Google SGE is good. No, great. And Google can turn it on for its billions of users whenever it wants to; itā€™s more a matter of economics.

So, OpenAI isnā€™t just vying with Google Search; it's up against both Google Search AND Google SGE.

Either way, ChatGPT's search feature will be a crucial tool for any ChatGPT power users who donā€™t want to switch tabs to Google for every search question.

In other news: Remember that mysterious chatbot called gpt2-chatbot that popped up and looked competitive, if not better than ChatGPT-4? Well, it has a cousin named ā€œim-a-good-gpt2-chatbot,ā€ and, indeed, it turns out the rumors were true: these models almost definitely originate from OpenAI.

There are all sorts of theories about what these models areā€”a fine-tuned ChatGPT-2, OpenAI soft-launching ChatGPT-4.5, or a smaller GPT-4 model thatā€™ll power ChatGPTā€™s search engine.
